President Tinubu Announces Full Appointment of Governing Council Members for Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
President Tinubu has fully reconstituted the Governing Council of UNIZIK, appointing four new members from across Nigeria to restore the council’s legal and operational functionality.
The appointments reflect national inclusivity, with representatives from the South East, North West, and South West, reinforcing Tinubu’s broader push to reform governance in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the appointment of new members to the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State. This move comes as part of the President’s broader effort to strengthen the governance structure and enhance the operational capacity of federal institutions across the country.
Previously, President Tinubu had dissolved the existing Governing Council of the university and initiated steps toward reconstituting a new one. However, the initial appointments did not complete the process, leaving the council unable to function in full legal capacity. With the latest appointments, the council is now considered fully constituted and can proceed to perform its statutory responsibilities without hindrance.
The newly appointed members of the Governing Council represent various geopolitical zones of the country, reflecting the federal character principle and a commitment to inclusive governance.
The appointed members are as follows:
- Dr. Nkem Okeke – Representing the South East region
- Ofoke Chukwuma Charles Ugbala – Also from the South East
- Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa – Representing the North West
- Nojeeb Oriola Agunbiade – Representing the South West
These individuals bring with them diverse experiences and professional expertise, which are expected to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the university.
The appointment was officially communicated by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to revamping the country’s higher education governance framework.
This move marks another step in the President’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving standards in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
