Man Utd’s Far East Fumble: Red Devils Booed Off in Malaysia
After concluding their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on May 25, 2025, Manchester United’s postseason tour to Asia took a disappointing turn in Kuala Lumpur.
The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Malaysian All-Stars, courtesy of a second-half goal from Myanmar winger Maung Maung Lwin. This loss gave a South East Asia XI (ASEAN) a victory in front of an official attendance of 72,550 at Bukit Jalil Stadium, leading to boos from frustrated fans who had paid up to £260 to watch United’s first visit to Malaysia since 2009.
Reuben Amorim states that he feels guilty for his team’s performance, and he felt that when the match concluded, he thought the fans were still in support, the boos may be something we need because every time we lost in the Premier League, the fans were always there, Let’s see for next season.

Instead of the customary applause at full-time, United’s players were met with jeers as they left the pitch. The team finished 15th in the Premier League with 42 points, marking what is widely considered the club’s worst campaign since the 1973-74 relegation season.
Ending Trophyless after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham 1-0 in Bilbao and leading to been kicked out of the next season’s champions league. This highlights that even a friendly defeat can sting when expectations are high.
What Comes Next
United will travel to Hong Kong for their next friendly on May 30, where they will face a local team. Following that, their schedule includes:
July 19: Man United vs. Leeds (Stockholm)
July 26: Man United vs. West Ham (New Jersey, USA)
July 30: Man United vs. Bournemouth (Chicago, USA)
August 3: Man United vs. Everton (Atlanta, USA)
August 9: Man United vs. Fiorentina (Old Trafford)
Upon conclusion United will take a break for the summer. And start their 2025/206 pre-season in July.
Ruben Amorim’s squad must quickly bounce back to calm anxious supporters and build momentum ahead of the pre-season.
Pre-season tours are generally focused on fitness and experimentation, but losing on foreign soil while being booed sends a clear message: United must sharpen both their mindset and tactics. The Red Devils need to use this wake-up call to rediscover the cohesion and confidence that once made them champions. Without that, they could face another unpleasant surprise when the real season begins.
