Nigeria Police Crack Down on Extortion Along Benin Bypass: Officers Face Disciplinary Action

In swift response to a viral video capturing brazen acts of extortion by police officers along the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive disciplinary action in alignment with its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and unprofessional conduct.

Six officers involved in the incident, including their supervising officer a Chief Superintendent of Police were summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They appeared before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, who described their behavior as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”

The IGP immediately directed the commencement of disciplinary proceedings. The officers have since been issued queries, and orderly room trials have begun for the Inspectors directly implicated in the extortion footage.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its firm commitment to professionalism, integrity, and public accountability. It emphasized that misconduct, especially involving extortion and abuse of power, will be met with appropriate sanctions in accordance with established disciplinary protocols.

The public is urged to continue reporting such incidents, confident in the assurance that the Force remains resolute in cleansing its ranks of unethical behavior.
