INEC Sets Dates for Ekiti and Osun Governorship Polls, Finalizes Bye-Election Plans
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States. According to the commission, the Ekiti State governorship election will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2026, while that of Osun State is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.
This announcement was made by the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during the formal swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). The ceremony was held at the INEC headquarters on Friday, shortly after the new commissioners were confirmed by the National Assembly.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the significance of early preparations for major off-cycle elections and assured the public that the commission is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible polls in both states. He noted that the timely release of the election dates is part of INEC’s broader commitment to transparency and efficiency in the electoral process.
“These elections are crucial, and the commission is already putting plans in motion to ensure that we maintain the highest standards of electoral integrity,” Yakubu stated. “We are working with stakeholders and security agencies to create an enabling environment for peaceful and credible polls.”
In addition to the upcoming governorship elections, Prof. Yakubu also disclosed that the commission is in the final stages of preparation for several bye-elections. These bye-elections are aimed at filling vacant seats in both the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly across the country.
He explained that details of the bye-election schedule would be announced shortly, noting that the vacancies resulted from court rulings, resignations, or the unfortunate demise of some elected lawmakers.
Yakubu concluded by urging the newly sworn-in RECs to uphold the principles of impartiality and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, especially as the commission enters a critical phase of electoral activities.
