Grief and Support: Kano Government Gives ₦1 Million Each to Families of Fallen Athletes

What should have been a triumphant return home for Kano’s young athletes ended in unspeakable sorrow. Just miles from their destination, tragedy struck, claiming the lives of 22 athletes and officials who had represented the state at the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The news shattered hearts across the nation.

During a solemn visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the bodies were taken, Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo stood before grieving families and stunned officials. Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo expressed the state’s collective grief and pledged swift support for those left behind.

“These young men and women had just made us proud. Some returned home with gold medals, a symbol of their dedication and talent,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “To lose them in this way is a devastating blow, not just to Kano but to the entire country.”

A helping hand in a time of pain

To ease the burden on the bereaved families, the Kano State Government announced a ₦1 million cash relief package for each household affected by the tragedy. The funds are to be disbursed immediately, alongside food supplies and other essential items.

“The governor has given a direct order: no delays. These families need us now more than ever,” Gwarzo assured. “They are not alone in their pain.”

He also confirmed that the government will cover all medical expenses for survivors and continue to assist in their recovery.

“We’ve already identified 20 of the deceased here at the hospital. Two others have been laid to rest by their families,” he added.

A moment of national mourning

The incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences from Nigerians far and wide. Messages of sympathy have flooded social media and community spaces, with many calling for better safety measures during athlete transportation.

Gwarzo concluded the hospital visit with a heartfelt prayer: “On behalf of Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano, we pray that Almighty Allah forgives their shortcomings and grants them eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus.”

As Kano mourns its fallen heroes, the nation stands in solidarity, grieving not just athletes but sons and daughters who carried the pride of their state until the very end.
