Chelsea have completed the signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in a £30 million move, with the 22-year-old passing the final phase of his medical and agreeing personal terms with the London club.

Delap, who had a release clause in his contract following Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League, becomes one of the first key additions of what promises to be a busy summer at Stamford Bridge. Despite interest from Manchester United and Newcastle, the England youth international was clear about his preference to join Chelsea, citing the club’s style of play, youthful squad, and long-term project under Enzo Maresca as deciding factors.
Delap is familiar with several Chelsea players and staff, having previously worked alongside Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia in Manchester City’s youth setup. He also shares a strong connection with new head coach Enzo Maresca and co-director of recruitment Joe Shields, relationships believed to have played a major role in the forward’s decision to join the Blues.
The striker was reportedly impressed by Chelsea’s performance in the recent UEFA Conference League final victory over Real Betis, further strengthening his resolve to become part of the club’s exciting new chapter.
With the FIFA Club World Cup approaching and Chelsea back in the UEFA Champions League, squad depth is a top priority. The Blues will compete in at least eight Champions League fixtures, along with 38 league games and multiple domestic cup competitions. As a result, there will be plenty of, especially with a condensed pre-season due to the Club World Cup schedule.
Peter Smith described Delap as one of the most promising attacking talents in English football, praising his versatility and ability to score from a variety of situations. Despite Ipswich’s relegation, Delap stood out by reaching double digits in goals, demonstrating both composure and creativity.
“He’s not just a finisher, he holds up play, creates space, and ranks among the top Premier League forwards for take-ons,” said Smith. “He’s overperformed his expected goals, which is always a sign of a clinical striker.”
Chelsea’s strategy under their current leadership has been clear: invest in young, high-potential players on long-term, incentive-based contracts. Delap fits that mould perfectly. His £30m price tag is also seen as a bargain compared to the inflated valuations of many strikers currently linked with Premier League clubs.
The deal could also spark a related transfer, with Ipswich reportedly eyeing Chelsea’s young striker Marc Guiu as a potential replacement for Delap. The 18-year-old is admired by Ipswich scouts and may be included in discussions between the two clubs.
Delap’s arrival adds competition for Nicolas Jackson, who led Chelsea’s line last season. However, with the club preparing for a demanding campaign on multiple fronts, both forwards are expected to play significant roles.
As Chelsea continues to rebuild under Maresca, more attacking signings are anticipated. The club reportedly has a list of nine to ten winger targets and could move for another striker if space is freed up in the squad.
With Delap now officially a Blue, Chelsea fans will be eager to see if the promising forward can take his game to new heights and help push the team toward Premier League and European success.
