Confession at the EFCC: Man Turns Himself In Over N9m Employment Scam in Gombe

In a surprising twist, Idris Adamu voluntarily turned himself in at the EFCC’s Gombe office, confessing to defrauding victims of N9 million in fake job offers.

His bold admission shocked operatives, highlighting growing fear of the anti-graft agency. The EFCC has launched a full investigation to trace victims and potentially uncover a wider employment scam network.

In an unusual turn of events at the Gombe Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a middle-aged man, overwhelmed by guilt and fear, voluntarily surrendered himself to the anti-graft agency on Monday, June 2, 2025. The suspect, identified as Idris Adamu, made an unanticipated appearance at the EFCC office around 1:00 p.m., requesting to see the Acting Zonal Director.

Adamu’s visit was not business as usual. Upon arrival, he asked to meet with Deputy Commander of the EFCC (DCE), Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, who currently heads the Gombe Zonal Office. When ushered into the director’s office, Adamu made a startling confession: he had, over time, defrauded several unsuspecting individuals under the guise of securing them job placements in federal government agencies.

According to the self-confessed fraudster, he amassed approximately N9 million through this deceptive operation. He admitted that the funds were funneled into his personal bank account, with victims believing they were paying for guaranteed employment slots that never existed.

“I came to repent of my sins and to confess to the EFCC,” Adamu stated during his confession. “In the past, I have obtained the aggregate sum of N9 million through my bank account from different individuals in the guise of offering them employment opportunities in Federal Government agencies, which was false. I have changed, but I am afraid of the EFCC.”

His admission came as a shock to EFCC operatives, not because of the nature of the crime which the Commission has long battled but due to the rare initiative of a suspect voluntarily presenting himself without coercion or arrest. The act underscores the growing psychological pressure and fear the EFCC’s growing presence has instilled in individuals engaged in financial crimes.

Reacting to the confession, the Acting Zonal Director, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, commended Adamu for taking the bold step of turning himself in and speaking the truth about his actions. However, Sa’ad also noted that while remorse was commendable, it did not absolve one of the legal consequences associated with such crimes. He immediately directed that Adamu be transferred to the Investigation Department for thorough questioning and proper documentation of his statement.

The EFCC is expected to open a full investigation into Adamu’s activities, including identifying his victims and tracing the illicit funds. Authorities believe this could lead to more discoveries of accomplices or a broader syndicate involved in employment-related scams, which have plagued Nigeria’s job-seeking population for years.

This dramatic confession highlights the continued challenges facing Nigeria in the fight against fraud and the exploitation of desperate job seekers. Employment scams remain a persistent threat, preying on the vulnerabilities of youths and others searching for stable work. The EFCC has consistently warned citizens to remain vigilant and to verify any job offers that require upfront payments.

As of press time, the EFCC has not released additional details about the victims or whether restitution will be pursued as part of the legal process. However, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice and using the case as a reminder that crime, no matter how long ago, has consequences.

For Idris Adamu, what began as a fearful step toward confession may now lead to full legal accountability and possibly closure for those he defrauded.
