The arrest, confirmed by the Anambra State Police Command, was carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, who trailed and captured the suspects after a meticulous investigation.
According to the command, the two men identified as 35-year-old Uche Egwu and 32-year-old Jindo Onyeka were arrested in connection with the April 13, 2025 ambush on both police and military personnel in Enugwu-Agu village, located in Oba Ofemili, Awka North Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m., saw a group of armed assailants launch an unprovoked attack on security operatives and community stakeholders, culminating in the destruction of a military vehicle by fire.
Following their arrest, both suspects reportedly confessed to their roles in the assault and have been assisting investigators by providing actionable intelligence on other individuals believed to be part of the criminal operation.
In response to the breakthrough, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved, noting that their swift action prevented what could have been a more tragic outcome. He urged law enforcement to widen the scope of the investigation, ensuring that all those connected to the heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice.
“This is not just an attack on the police or military it is an attack on our national integrity and the peace of our communities. We must all rise collectively to support those who risk their lives daily to protect us,” the Commissioner stated.
He also reiterated the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to work closely with local stakeholders and sister agencies to ensure continued security and to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. The CP further called on residents of the area to remain vigilant and cooperative by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
In an official statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on June 3, 2025, the command assured the public of its determination to pursue justice in the matter. He emphasized that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals who may have fled the scene or are currently in hiding.
