Renowned activist Verydarkman has responded to Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder of Salvation Ministries, following a viral video where the pastor threatened to arrest bloggers and online media platforms for reporting on him and his church.
The video, which rapidly circulated on social media, captured Pastor Ibiyeomie issuing a stern warning to content creators and journalists to refrain from including his name in their stories. His comments drew mixed reactions, with many viewers questioning the appropriateness of a religious leader threatening legal action over public commentary.
In response, Verydarkman took to his own platform to criticize the pastor’s stance, accusing him of misusing his influence and attempting to suppress freedom of expression.
“I know you travel the world, but have you ever seen anyone using the police to lock people up just for speaking out?” he said. “That’s oppression, plain and simple. You can’t pull this off in other countries, because their police follow the due process. But here, some people think being influential means they can command the police like puppets.”
He continued, “Even pastors contribute to the country’s problems, but people don’t see it. Nobody dey fear you. Who are you that we should be afraid of? You’re no different from anyone else, you’re just human like the rest of us.”
Verydarkman’s blunt remarks sparked a wave of online reactions, many of which echoed his sentiments.
@Abasiono_Ek wrote: “This kind of arrogance has reached the church. As the leaders boast about being above the law, now the pastors are doing the same. I like that phrase, ‘To liberate a nation, we have to drop respect.’ It hits hard.”
@TVNDEY added: “I blame the people calling them ‘men of God.’ Many hide behind scriptures, but their character says otherwise.”
@olumidebravo3 pointed out: “There are more churches than cinemas, schools, hospitals, or even recreational facilities in this country.” Until we start calling out the fraud, we’ll never truly be free.”
The clash has reignited ongoing debates around the influence of religious leaders in Nigeria, and the fine line between respect and unquestioned authority.
