Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has strongly criticized popular Port Harcourt-based preacher, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, over his recent threats to arrest and detain individuals who report negatively about him.

The criticism followed a viral video where the Salvation Ministries founder lashed out at bloggers and social media commentators, accusing them of misrepresenting his sermons for personal or malicious gain. Pastor Ibiyeomie, visibly displeased, warned that he would no longer tolerate such behavior and vowed to take decisive legal action against anyone who “crosses the line.”

In the video, he declared, “My type when I go after people, they will now send people to come and beg. So I’m warning you for the last time… I will arrest you, I will lock you up. I don’t care. No man of God will pray for you and succeed.”

He further warned bloggers and even members of his church against sharing clips or stories that could be twisted, stating clearly: “Don’t carry my news. I don’t want your news… You won’t make me popular.”

He accused some church members of leaking snippets of his messages to incite controversy online. He concluded his remarks with a stern declaration of his zero-tolerance approach: “My gospel is before you slap, I slap you. I am not that kind of pastor. Young man, I will fight you.”

Reacting to these comments, Adeyanju faulted the pastor’s position, reminding him that even Jesus Christ faced public criticism without resorting to threats or police action. He maintained that no religious leader should use their influence to suppress freedom of expression or intimidate dissenting voices.
