Why We Must Hold Influential Women Accountable Not Glorify Reckless Behavior
Dear fellow Nigerians,
Over the past few weeks, three women have dominated public discourse not for acts of brilliance or leadership, but for actions that many would argue reflect poorly on the values we claim to uphold. While their supporters continue to cloak their behavior in the veil of “sisterhood” and empowerment, I believe it’s time we apply some much-needed honesty to the conversation.
Let me be blunt: not every woman who gains fame or notoriety deserves applause. When public figures, especially women, act in ways that undermine personal responsibility and decency, we must not hesitate to call it out regardless of gender.
Here are three pieces of advice I strongly believe in:
First, steer clear of those who blindly support such individuals. If someone is willing to excuse carelessness or moral lapses just because it aligns with their gender politics, you should be wary especially when it comes to serious matters like business or marriage. Values matter, and those who endorse recklessness may very well practice it.
Second, be cautious of those who remain conveniently silent. Sitting on the fence in moments that demand moral clarity is not neutrality it’s cowardice. This is particularly troubling when it comes from women who are typically vocal on social issues, yet suddenly go mute when accountability is required within their own circle. Silence in the face of wrongdoing is not solidarity; it’s complicity.
And finally, respect those who speak up even when it’s unpopular. It takes courage to challenge narratives that dominate social media and public opinion. Those who can call out irresponsibility without fear or favor are rare gems. If you ever find someone like that someone whose voice doesn’t shake when speaking truth consider them not only trustworthy, but worth holding close.
In an age where clout often drowns out character, let’s remember that true empowerment lies in responsibility, not recklessness.
Let’s be guided.
