Ajibade Confident Super Falcons Will Shine at Women’s AFCON

Super Falcons vice-captain Rasheedat Ajibade says the team is fired up to reclaim glory at the Women’s AFCON, promising to make Nigerians proud.

With fierce determination and renewed confidence, she urged fans to rally behind the squad as they aim to bring the trophy back from Morocco.

Super Falcons vice-captain Rasheedat Ajibade has expressed strong optimism about Nigeria’s chances at the upcoming 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AFCON), promising that the team will give their all to make the nation proud.

Note: The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will now be held in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025. The tournament was shifted from its original 2024 schedule to avoid overlapping with the Summer Olympics.

Speaking during a media session ahead of the prestigious continental tournament, Ajibade emphasised that the team is fully focused and prepared to leave a lasting impression. The tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco, presents another opportunity for the nine-time champions to reassert their dominance in African women’s football after missing out on the title in the previous edition.

Determined to make Nigerians proud

Ajibade, who plays her club football for Atletico Madrid in Spain, stressed that the Super Falcons are determined to correct past mistakes and return to the summit of African football.

“We know what is at stake and we are ready to give our very best,” she said. “Representing Nigeria comes with a lot of pride and responsibility. We are not just going there to participate, we are going there to make a difference, to make Nigerians proud.”

The dynamic winger also spoke highly of the team’s preparation so far, noting that the blend of experience and youthful energy has fostered a competitive atmosphere in camp.

A team ready for battle

The American tactician Randy Waldrum, who led the team to a commendable showing at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, is looking to build on that momentum.

Ajibade believes the team’s recent international exposure has played a vital role in sharpening their competitive edge.

“We’ve had some tough matches in the past year, and those experiences have helped us to grow as a team,” she said. “We now understand what it takes to compete at the highest level, and we are carrying that mindset into AFCON.”

Eyes on the trophy

With Nigeria’s rich history in the Women’s AFCON, having won nine of the last 11 editions, expectations are naturally high. However, Ajibade says the team is not feeling the pressure but rather drawing motivation from the legacy they represent.

“This generation of players wants to write its own story. We respect the achievements of those before us, and we want to build on that. Our goal is simple: go to Morocco, play good football, and bring home the trophy.”

Support from home key to success

Ajibade concluded by calling on Nigerians to rally behind the Super Falcons as they head into the tournament.

“Your support means everything. We feel the energy from back home, and it drives us to do more. With your prayers and encouragement, we believe something special is possible.”
