Former Nigerian Senator and Ambassador, Professor Jibril Aminu, Passes Away at 85

Nigeria has lost one of its distinguished statesmen, Professor Jibril Aminu, who passed away on Wednesday in Abuja after a prolonged illness. He was 85 years old.

Professor Aminu, who was well known both in academic and political circles, had an impressive career that spanned medicine, diplomacy, and legislative service. Before venturing into politics, he made a name for himself as a renowned cardiologist. He earned his first medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and went on to pursue advanced studies abroad. In 1972, he obtained a doctorate in medicine from the prestigious Royal Post-Graduate Medical School in London.

His contribution to the nation extended beyond medicine. In 1999, he was appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, a position he held until 2003. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with the U.S. and was recognized for his diplomatic skills and deep understanding of international affairs.

Following his service as an ambassador, Professor Aminu transitioned into politics. He was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2003, representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District. He remained in the Senate until 2011, where he contributed significantly to national policymaking and legislative oversight.

Known for his intellect, integrity, and commitment to national development, Professor Aminu was respected across party lines and admired by many within the academic, political, and diplomatic communities.

He is survived by two wives and nine children, leaving behind a legacy marked by service, dedication, and excellence. Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, friends, and leaders across the country, who remember him as a patriot who gave his best in every role he held.
