President Tinubu Warns Police Against Harassing Nigerians

President Tinubu has urged police officers to serve with integrity and avoid intimidating citizens. Speaking at the IGP’s Award Ceremony, he emphasized professionalism, accountability, and modern policing strategies.

He assured continued government investment in equipment and training, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to building a responsible and community-focused police force.

President Bola Tinubu has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force to exercise their powers with responsibility, emphasizing that their role is to serve and protect the public rather than intimidate or exploit them. The president delivered this message through a representative at the 2nd Annual Inspector General of Police (IGP) Award and Commendation Ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday, June 4.

Speaking through Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu stressed the importance of professionalism, transparency, and ethical conduct in the police force. He cautioned officers against any misuse of authority and urged them to align their actions with the values of the rule of law and respect for human rights.

“The authority you hold must not be used to oppress citizens. It is meant to protect lives and maintain peace in our communities,” the president stated. He also reminded officers that the trust and power vested in them should not be abused for personal interest or gain.

President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges facing law enforcement in Nigeria and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting police reform. He assured the public that the federal government would continue to provide funding for better tools, modern technology, and capacity-building programs designed to improve the effectiveness and morale of officers nationwide.

Highlighting the evolving nature of security threats, Tinubu called for the adoption of modern policing strategies, especially intelligence-driven operations and stronger partnerships between police and the communities they serve. He stressed that maintaining a positive relationship between law enforcement and the public is crucial to building lasting peace and stability.

The event honored several officers for their outstanding performance and dedication to duty. Tinubu congratulated the award recipients, describing them as role models who embody the qualities expected of public servants. However, he also encouraged them to continue improving and not become complacent with past achievements.

He pointed out that citizens expect a police force that is responsible, reliable, and respectful. The president stated that police officers must always be conscious of their responsibility to the nation and must uphold the integrity of their uniform.

Tinubu’s remarks reaffirm the federal government’s vision for a reformed and respected police institution. His address serves as both recognition of the officers’ work and a call for continued vigilance, integrity, and accountability within the force.

By strengthening support systems and setting clear expectations, the government aims to create a law enforcement body that truly protects and serves all Nigerians.
