FG Sets Up Committee to Coordinate 2025 Democracy Day Celebration, Akume to Chair

The Federal Government has inaugurated a high-level committee to plan the 2025 Democracy Day, reflecting its renewed focus on unity and national progress.

Chaired by SGF Senator George Akume, the inter-ministerial team will coordinate nationwide events to showcase achievements and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance.

The Federal Government has formally inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee tasked with organizing the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, signaling its commitment to upholding democratic values and reflecting on national progress under the current administration. The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, a key figure in national governance and policy coordination.

This development was disclosed in an official statement issued on Thursday, June 5, by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information in the Office of the SGF. Representing Senator Akume at the inauguration ceremony was the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, who stressed the significance of Democracy Day in Nigeria’s political calendar.

Bagudu, speaking during the committee’s inauguration, described Democracy Day as both a symbolic and practical occasion. It serves not only to remember the country’s democratic journey but also to showcase government achievements and reinforce its commitment to democratic principles. He encouraged committee members to align their activities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to deliver meaningful progress across critical sectors of governance.

“The Democracy Day celebration is a vital national event that allows the government to reflect, celebrate, and recommit to the ideals of democracy. It is also an opportunity to communicate our progress to Nigerians and strengthen national unity,” Bagudu said.

A detailed schedule of activities was unveiled for the 2025 celebration. The lineup begins with a World Press Briefing slated for Friday, June 6, 2025, followed by a Special Juma’at Service on the same day. A Christian service will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, while a Youth Engagement Program is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2025. A Public Lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 11, culminating in a Presidential Address and Parade on Thursday, June 12, 2025 the official Democracy Day.

The committee comprises top-ranking government officials across various ministries and agencies, demonstrating the federal government’s inter-sectoral approach to national celebrations. Members include the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Other prominent figures on the committee are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman. Security and logistics are also well represented, with the inclusion of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi; and Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade.

Administrative coordination will be handled by several permanent secretaries, including Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri from the General Services Office of the OSGF; Kachollom Daju from the Ministry of Health; and Engr. Nadungu Gagare from the Political and Economic Affairs Office, who will also serve as the committee’s Secretary.

With this broad-based committee in place, the Federal Government is aiming for a well-coordinated and inclusive celebration that highlights democratic progress, encourages civic participation, and promotes unity among Nigerians as the nation moves forward.
