The revered jurist, who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria between 1995 and 2006, died peacefully, leaving behind a legacy deeply etched in the annals of Nigeria’s judicial history.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais rose through the ranks of Nigeria’s legal system to become one of its most respected figures. Throughout his 11-year tenure as Chief Justice, he was known for his integrity, advocacy for judicial reform, and commitment to maintaining the independence of the judiciary. His leadership was marked by significant strides toward a more transparent and effective justice system.
The Uwais family confirmed his death in an official statement released to the public. The announcement read:
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts heavy yet full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation.”
According to the family, funeral rites were scheduled to be held today at the National Mosque in Abuja immediately after Juma’at prayers. The announcement has drawn tributes from across the country, with many legal practitioners, public officials, and citizens paying homage to the late jurist.
