Authorities responded swiftly, and local officials have assured affected traders of support while investigations into the cause are ongoing.
A heartbreaking incident struck the popular Farm Center GSM Market in Kano State on Sallah Day as a massive fire broke out, destroying over 300 shops and causing property losses running into millions of naira. The incident occurred around 2:00 pm in the Tarauni Local Government Area, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a festive occasion.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire originated from a section of the market known as the Dan Sileka building. It quickly spread through several stalls, primarily affecting shops that sold mobile phones and accessories. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, though many suspect it may have been triggered by an electrical fault or a flammable substance.
Emergency responders from the Kano State Fire Service arrived promptly and succeeded in containing the flames before they could spread to other parts of the market. Their swift response played a critical role in minimizing the overall damage and possibly saving lives.
Adamu Iliyasu Hotoro, the Information Officer of Tarauni Local Government, confirmed the incident and shared that the council’s Executive Chairman, Ahmed Sekure, visited the scene shortly after the fire started. During his visit, Sekure expressed heartfelt sympathy to the affected traders and offered prayers, asking God to help them recover from their losses.
He also stressed the importance of implementing preventive strategies to avoid such tragedies in the future. Sekure promised to engage with relevant authorities to improve safety standards at the market.
Leaders of the market community, including Ambassador Jamilu Bala Gama and Abdula’ziz Usman Mai Tabarma, thanked Sekure for his prompt visit and concern. They praised the firefighters for their bravery and called on government agencies to support affected traders in rebuilding their livelihoods.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for stronger safety measures in public markets to protect lives and property.
