PDP Urges Peter Obi and Former Members to Return as Party Rebuilds

PDP in Anambra has urged former members, including Peter Obi, to return as the party undergoes restructuring.

Party leaders rallied support for upcoming candidates and called on INEC to ensure transparent elections, while also nominating Chief Clems Ezike to a key national role.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has made a heartfelt appeal to former members, including the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to return to the party’s fold as it undergoes restructuring and revival.

This appeal was made public on Thursday following an expanded meeting of the PDP State Executive Committee (SEC), which convened in Awka to assess the party’s current position and strategize on its future direction within the state.

In a communique signed by the state PDP Chairman, Mr. Chidi Chidebe, the party emphasized the importance of unity and ideological alignment in building a stronger political front. Chidebe noted that the committee unanimously agreed that entering alliances with parties lacking shared ideologies or vision may not produce meaningful or sustainable outcomes.

The statement specifically called on former governor Peter Obi to consider returning to the PDP, the party under which he served the people of Anambra. Obi had left the PDP ahead of the 2023 general election after expressing dissatisfaction with the internal dynamics of the party, eventually contesting under the Labour Party banner.

“The PDP in Anambra remains open and welcoming to all who have left, especially distinguished individuals like our former governor, Mr. Peter Obi,” Chidebe stated. “The party has undergone significant reforms and rejuvenation, and we believe now is the right time for reconciliation and collective action. Our doors are open to all our brothers and sisters who share the vision of building a better Nigeria.”

Chidebe also used the occasion to rally support for the party’s candidates in the upcoming elections. He urged voters across the state to throw their weight behind Mr. Jude Ezenwafor and his running mate, Mr. Francis Okeke, expressing confidence in their capacity to lead with integrity and deliver on key promises.

Furthermore, he called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold the principles of democracy by conducting a transparent and credible electoral process. According to Chidebe, only a fair playing field can restore public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

In a related development, the party also filled a key leadership vacancy. Chief Clems Ezike was nominated to serve as the National Ex-Officio representative from Anambra State. Chidebe urged the South-East Zonal Executive Committee, led by Chief Ali Odefa, to endorse the nomination and forward it to the PDP’s national leadership for formal ratification.

As the party seeks to rebuild and reconnect with its base in Anambra, the leadership believes that unity, inclusiveness, and a renewed sense of purpose will be key to reclaiming its position in the state’s political landscape.
