Nigerian medical expert, Aproko Doctor, has shared an important health warning for parents and caregivers, urging them not to allow babies under the age of one to sleep face down. His message, delivered in a viral video circulating on social media, has sparked widespread discussion among Nigerians.
In the video, Aproko Doctor addressed a common child-rearing practice that he believes poses a serious risk to infants. He explained that allowing babies to sleep on their stomachs can increase the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a condition that often leads to unexplained deaths in otherwise healthy infants during sleep.
He stressed that while this sleeping position may be popular in many Nigerian homes, it is not safe for babies. “Babies under one year do not have full control of their head or neck muscles,” he said. “If they are placed face down, they may not be able to turn their heads to breathe properly.”
The doctor went on to explain a serious medical concern called Hypercapnia, which refers to the buildup of carbon dioxide in the body. According to him, when babies sleep face down, they often end up breathing in the same air repeatedly. This can prevent them from getting enough oxygen, increasing the risk of breathing problems or even death.
Aproko Doctor’s advice is clear: place babies on their backs when they sleep. He urged parents to take these precautions seriously to ensure the safety and well-being of their children.
