Victor Boniface Shocks Fans with Sudden International Retirement
Victor Boniface has stunned fans by retiring from international football at just 24, following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia. Despite club success, he struggled to shine for the Super Eagles.
His emotional farewell post came minutes after being subbed off during the friendly. Fans are now left reflecting on what could’ve been.
Victor Boniface has called time on his international career with Nigeria at just 24 years old, following another disappointing performance in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Russia on Friday night.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker was named in the starting lineup for the friendly held in Moscow but was substituted in the 61st minute. His replacement, Genk’s Tolu Arokodare, would go on to score the equaliser just ten minutes later a moment that seemed to underline Boniface’s continued struggle to deliver in national colours.
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared shortly after the match, Boniface confirmed his decision to retire from international football, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria.
“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also,” he wrote. “Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot.”
The announcement sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community, with many fans expressing surprise over the timing and finality of the decision. Despite his stellar club form helping Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga glory, Boniface’s impact for the Super Eagles has been limited, with only one goal in 13 appearances. His lone strike came during a 2023 AFCON qualification match against São Tomé and Príncipe.
Boniface’s frustration has been visible in recent outings. Once considered a long-term prospect for Nigeria’s forward line, the former Union Saint-Gilloise star never quite replicated his club performances on the international stage.
His retirement marks an abrupt end to what many hoped would be a flourishing national team career. However, Boniface leaves with his head held high, thankful for the memories and the unwavering support of Nigerian fans.
The draw against Russia extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run under new head coach Eric Chelle, who took charge in January 2025. Yet, the result has now been overshadowed by the striker’s surprise exit from international football.
As the Super Eagles look ahead, the spotlight will now shift to younger talents stepping up to fill the void left by Boniface’s departure, a reminder that in football, transitions come fast, and opportunities await the next man up.
