FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Celebrate Democracy Day
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day.
The day marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.
The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration across the country.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior. As stated in the release, the announcement was issued by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm congratulations to Nigerians as the nation marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. He emphasized the significance of the day in Nigeria’s political journey, describing it as a symbol of the nation’s collective commitment to justice, unity, and democratic values.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured,” the minister stated.
He further highlighted that the 26-year stretch of civilian rule stands as a testament to the country’s resilience and the enduring strength of its people. “The last 26 years tells the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope Renewed than ever,” he added.
While reflecting on the nation’s democratic growth, Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted that the process remains a work in progress, open to continuous development. He reassured citizens of the current administration’s dedication to upholding democratic ideals and principles.
The minister reiterated the unwavering commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda to the universal values of democracy. He stated that the administration is anchored on the freely expressed will of the people, which remains central to determining Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
The public holiday is expected to allow Nigerians time to reflect on the journey so far and renew their dedication to democratic principles as the country continues its path toward sustainable national development.
