LASTMA Nabs Suspected Hit-and-Run Driver After Fatal Crash in Lagos
A speeding driver struck a pedestrian in Lagos, resulting in her death, and then attempted to flee the scene.
LASTMA officials apprehended him promptly, and police have launched an investigation.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have arrested a driver who allegedly attempted to escape after being involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian.
The development was confirmed by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos. The statement was signed by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the agency.

According to Bakare-Oki, the tragic incident involved a black Toyota Tundra with the registration number FST 222 HV. The crash occurred around the Mosalasi Roundabout along New Ipaja Road.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle, speeding, veered uncontrollably off the carriageway, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and fatally struck a woman who died instantly from the impact,” he said.
He further explained that the vehicle continued its movement due to the force of the impact and crashed into a nearby private compound known for livestock sales. The crash caused serious damage to the property’s perimeter fence and an advertising billboard attached to it.
Bakare-Oki stated that the driver, realizing the seriousness of what had happened, tried to flee the scene. However, he was quickly stopped and apprehended by LASTMA officers who acted swiftly and with coordination.
“The driver, upon realising the gravity of the calamity he caused, made a frantic attempt to flee the scene. However, thanks to the prompt, coordinated and courageous intervention of officials from LASTMA. The suspect was swiftly apprehended and restrained,” he added.
The arrested driver was handed over to police officers from the Gowon Estate Command who arrived at the location shortly after the incident.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased woman was released to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for proper procedures. Bakare-Oki confirmed that the suspect has since been taken into custody and is currently being interrogated by the police as part of a broader investigation.
He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family. He also advised drivers to conduct regular checks on their vehicles, especially the braking systems.
According to him, obeying traffic laws goes beyond legal duty and plays a vital role in protecting lives and property.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to enforcing traffic laws and promoting road safety culture throughout the state,” Bakare-Oki said.
