Retired Army Major Dies in Kidnappers’ Custody Despite ₦10m Ransom Payment

Retired Army Major Joe Ajayi died in captivity despite a ₦10 million ransom payment, as kidnappers delayed medical help.

His death highlights rising insecurity and kidnapping cases in Kogi State.

A retired Army Major, Joe Ajayi, who was abducted from his home in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, has tragically died in captivity, even after a ransom of ₦10 million was paid in a desperate bid to secure his freedom.

Ajayi was kidnapped on the night of Wednesday, May 21, 2025, when armed men stormed his residence around 11:30pm, firing into the air to create panic before seizing him. His captors initially demanded a ransom of ₦50 million, but the retired officer’s family was unable to meet the high demand, leading to a long delay in negotiations.

During his time in captivity, Major Ajayi’s health reportedly worsened as he was unable to access his medication. Efforts by the family to send his drugs were met with further demands from the kidnappers, who asked for an additional payment before allowing any assistance. This request proved difficult for the family to meet, further endangering the victim’s condition.

As the situation became dire and the abductors realized that the victim’s life was at risk, they dropped the ransom demand to ₦10 million. Believing that Ajayi was still alive, the family hurried to raise the reduced amount in hopes of securing his release.

After receiving the ransom, the kidnappers directed the family to a location where they could find him. Sadly, when they arrived, they were met with the heartbreaking sight of his lifeless body. His remains have since been deposited at the mortuary of Kabba Specialist Hospital.

This incident highlights the increasing cases of kidnapping in Kogi State. Earlier in May, a traditional ruler, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the Oba of Okoloke in Yagba West LGA, was also abducted from his home and remains in captivity.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, while addressing worshippers during Eid in Okene, acknowledged the growing concern over insecurity in the state and urged residents to stay calm, assuring them that efforts to clamp down on criminal activities were beginning to show results.
