Sanwo-Olu Commissions Three New Trains on Lagos Blue Line
Lagos is on track for a transport revolution as Governor Sanwo-Olu unveils three new train sets for the Blue Line, doubling its passenger capacity instantly.
With faster intervals and reduced wait times, the expansion signals a major boost to urban mobility and a bold leap toward a smarter, connected city.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, marking a significant step in the state’s transportation development. The commissioning ceremony took place on Sunday at the National Theatre Station in Iganmu, with the governor announcing the new additions via his verified social media platforms.

Each of the newly introduced train sets consists of four cars, and their deployment is expected to substantially increase the current commuter capacity along the Blue Line corridor. According to Sanwo-Olu, the addition of these trains will effectively double the passenger intake and bring about a noticeable improvement in travel efficiency across the line.
“Today, I unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line at the National Theatre Station,” the governor said. “Each set contains four cars, and with this, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the new trains are not just symbolic of progress but are also instrumental in delivering immediate, practical benefits to thousands of daily commuters. These include reduced waiting periods, shorter commute times, and a more reliable and consistent train schedule. The ultimate objective, he noted, is to ensure that trains arrive at ten-minute intervals, bringing the service in line with global urban transit standards.
The commissioning comes as part of the Lagos State Government’s broader vision to modernize the city’s transportation infrastructure. The governor acknowledged the critical support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government in facilitating the procurement and delivery of the new train sets. Their involvement, he said, was vital to making the expansion a reality.
“I want to express our sincere appreciation to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for the strong backing we received throughout this process,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Their support played a pivotal role in ensuring these trains arrived on time and met the required specifications.”
Looking ahead, the governor announced that additional train sets are expected before the close of the year this time for the Red Line, another key component of the state’s mass transit plan. According to him, the upcoming Red Line trains will be even more robust, offering twice the capacity of the newly launched Blue Line units.
“By the end of the year, we’ll be receiving new train sets for the LRMT Red Line, and these will have double the capacity of the current Blue Line trains,” Sanwo-Olu disclosed. “We’re also making steady progress on the second phase of the Blue Line extension, which will run from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.”
Sanwo-Olu confirmed that his government will keep working to improve transportation in Lagos through ongoing investment in modern infrastructure. He described the current transportation projects as only the beginning of a long-term plan to transform the city into a more connected and commuter-friendly metropolis.
“We’re building not just train lines but a better future for millions of Lagosians,” the governor said. “And believe me, we’re just getting started.”
The LRMT Blue Line project, one of the flagship components of the Lagos State Strategic Transport Master Plan, is expected to play a critical role in easing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and improving the daily commuting experience for residents of Africa’s most populous city.
