Tinubu to Address Joint National Assembly Session on June 12 to Mark Democracy Day
President Bola Tinubu will deliver a special speech to a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 to celebrate Democracy Day 2025.
The address will reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, highlight national achievements, and renew calls for unity, development, and stronger democratic institutions.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a special address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, as part of events commemorating this year’s Democracy Day. The President’s address is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and reinforce the country’s shared commitment to national growth and development.
An internal memo from the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Yahaya Danzaria, confirmed the event, noting that President Tinubu is scheduled to arrive at the National Assembly Complex by 12:00 noon. Preparatory proceedings for the special session are expected to begin at 11:00 AM at the House of Representatives Chamber, where members of both legislative chambers will convene.
In an official statement released by the House’s spokesman, Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, the House of Representatives leadership and members expressed readiness to participate in the high-level session, which will serve as the central event of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
According to the statement, the theme for this year’s celebration is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” The event will not only include President Tinubu’s keynote address but also goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly. In addition, the President will confer national honours on selected legislators for their exceptional contributions to democratic governance.
“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement noted. “It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”
The event is anticipated to be both symbolic and strategic, offering President Tinubu an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic milestones while setting the tone for renewed political collaboration and national unity. Tinubu’s address is expected to touch on a range of issues, from electoral reforms and governance achievements to national security, economic revitalization, and social inclusion.
This year’s Democracy Day is particularly symbolic, as it marks over a quarter-century since the country transitioned from military rule to democratic governance in 1999. It also presents a platform to acknowledge the progress made so far and confront the challenges still facing the nation.
Beyond the ceremonial aspects, the National Assembly sees the special joint session as a moment for collective introspection and a recommitment to the founding ideals of Nigeria’s democratic experiment. Lawmakers are expected to use the occasion to reflect on legislative progress, renew calls for institutional strengthening, and promote policies aimed at deepening democratic culture.
The House of Representatives has called on all Nigerians to embrace the essence of Democracy Day, encouraging citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made in securing civil liberties and the responsibility of every citizen in shaping a better future for the nation.
“In celebrating this important day, we urge all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation,” the statement concluded.
President Tinubu’s participation is anticipated to set the tone for a day of national reflection and recommitment, reinforcing the role of democratic institutions in shaping the country’s future.
