Ebonyi’s Chuba Okadigbo Airport Launches Commercial Flights with Subsidized Fares

Ebonyi State celebrates a major breakthrough as commercial flights begin at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport this June.

With affordable fares and export plans underway, the state aims to boost tourism, trade, and global business connections.

Ebonyi State has entered a new era of connectivity as the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport officially begins commercial flight operations. The development, announced by the state government marks a significant milestone in the region’s transportation and economic growth.

Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, revealed that United Nigeria Airlines will commence scheduled flights from June 13, offering twice-weekly services from Onueke to Abuja (Mondays) and Lagos (Fridays). In a move to boost accessibility, Governor Francis Ogbonnaya Nwifuru’s administration has subsidized ticket prices to a flat rate of ₦100,000 less than half the usual fare for these routes.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to making air travel affordable while showcasing our achievements in infrastructure,” Obichukwu said during a press briefing.

Beyond passenger flights, the state plans to position the airport as an international cargo hub. The commissioner disclosed ongoing discussions with partners in Dubai and Canada to facilitate exports of Ebonyi’s agricultural and mineral resources, including yams, rice, cassava, salt, and limestone.

“Ebonyi is open for business. We are ready to trade with the world,” she emphasized.

Initially opened in 2023, the airport faced temporary suspension after aviation authorities flagged concerns about its concrete runway. Following upgrades to an asphalt surface aligned with regulatory standards the facility has now been cleared for operations.

“Critics have become admirers. Our runway now meets all safety requirements, thanks to the support of the NCAA, FAAN, and NAMA,” Obichukwu stated.

The commissioner also announced that an online booking platform, set for global rollout by October, is in its final stages. She urged travelers to secure tickets early, noting that the inaugural Abuja flight is already nearing full capacity.

“This is a historic opportunity. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis,” she advised.

Closing her address, Obichukwu framed the airport as a catalyst for broader transformation: “This isn’t just an airport; it’s a statement. Ebonyi is no longer overlooked we are a rising force in Nigeria’s development.”

With commercial flights set to take off next week, the state anticipates increased investment, tourism, and trade, reinforcing its place on the national and global map.
