French Tourist Found Dead in Benue Hotel After Falling Sick
A 67-year-old French cyclist was found dead in a Benue hotel while on a West African tour.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the mysterious incident.
A 67-year-old French national, Mr. Pietier Gilles, has been found dead in a hotel room in Gboko, Benue State, under circumstances now under police investigation. The late tourist, who had been cycling across West Africa, reportedly refused medical treatment before his sudden death.

Authorities in Benue State have confirmed the tragic death of Mr. Pietier Gilles, a French citizen believed to be on a transcontinental cycling tour. Gilles was discovered lifeless in his hotel room at Hotel Jovina in Gboko town, where he had checked in on June 6, 2025.
According to reports by security expert Zagazola Makama and statements from police sources, the incident was formally reported on Sunday, June 8, by the hotel manager, Mr. Emmanuel Terhide Laha. Laha contacted the “A” Division Police Station around 5:45 p.m. after hotel staff discovered that Gilles had passed away.
Mr. Laha told officers that the tourist had fallen ill a day after checking in, on June 7. Despite his worsening condition, Gilles reportedly declined offers to be taken to a hospital for treatment. Concerned about his health, the hotel management took the initiative to bring in a medical practitioner to evaluate his condition. However, upon arrival, the doctor confirmed that the Frenchman had already died.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer led a patrol team to the hotel, where the scene was documented and photographs were taken,” a police source stated. “The body was then evacuated and transferred to the General Hospital in Gboko, where it is now being preserved pending a formal autopsy.”
Initial investigations have revealed that Mr. Gilles entered Nigeria through the Niger Republic on May 19, 2025, as part of what authorities believe was a long-distance adventure across several African countries. He was traveling solo on a sports bicycle and had reportedly planned to pass through various Nigerian states on his journey.
While there were no immediate signs of foul play, police said they have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tourist’s death. Officers are reviewing hotel security footage, speaking to staff, and contacting individuals who may have interacted with the deceased during his stay in Nigeria.
As is protocol in cases involving foreign nationals, the Nigerian Police Force has initiated contact with the French Embassy and other relevant diplomatic channels to ensure proper handling of the case. An official autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, and results will be shared with French authorities in due course.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety and medical support systems available to international tourists visiting remote regions of Nigeria. While tourism in Nigeria remains relatively low compared to other African nations, the government has, in recent years, expressed interest in promoting cultural and adventure tourism across the country’s diverse landscapes.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and patient as investigations continue. Meanwhile, Hotel Jovina has suspended new check-ins temporarily out of respect for the deceased and to cooperate fully with law enforcement.
The sudden death of Mr. Pietier Gilles has sparked condolences across social media platforms, especially among Nigeria’s small but growing community of cyclists and international travelers. Many have expressed sympathy for the loss and called for improved emergency response services in rural hospitality centers.
