Lagos Court Sends 34 Street Traders to Prison Over Environmental Offenses
A Lagos court has ordered 34 street traders remanded until July 22 for illegal stalls along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway median.
The arrest follows a KAI and LAWMA crackdown as officials push to restore order and enforce environmental laws in public spaces.
A Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, has ordered the remand of 34 people in prison until July 22 for illegal street trading along the Alaba Rago to Ojo stretch of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The group, made up of 32 men and 2 women, was picked up during a joint enforcement operation carried out on Sunday.
The operation was led by officials from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). It was aimed at clearing the road median, which had been taken over by traders who built unauthorized stalls and shelters.
Authorities reported that among those arrested were individuals found sleeping in temporary structures set up on the median. Some of them are believed to be involved in unlawful activities in the area.
The names of those remanded include Ibrahim Abu, Isiaka Ashafa, Shaibu Isa, Abubakar Haruna, Aminu Haruna, Aminu Abdullahi, Zakariyahu Yahusa, Sunmola Musa, Samsideen Ali, Anthony Oyibo, Abubakar Yusuf, Muhammed Oseni, Aliu Mohammed, Lookman Adebayo, Igudu Ibrahim, Awalu Umar, Sani Babangida, Abdullahi Usman, Aliu Ibrahim, Roland David, David Timothy, Yusuf Adamu, Abdulsalam Sanusi, Nura Yusuf, Idris Isa, Nasiru Ali, Mayi Daniel, Isaac Samuel, Yahaya Mamuda, Salisu Ibrahim, Yusuf Adamu, Abdullahi Musa, Fadipe Bose, and Ebere Ndubuisi.
Commenting on the arrests, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, stressed that the government is serious about enforcing environmental regulations. He said maintaining order and cleanliness in public spaces is a shared responsibility.
Wahab also reminded the public of the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental offenses. He urged residents to respect public infrastructure and support efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone.
