Tragedy struck late Tuesday night in Chicim community, located in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, when gunmen launched a surprise attack that left at least eight people dead and several others wounded.

Residents say the attack began around 10 p.m., a time when most families had already settled in for the night. According to one of the locals, Nankus Habila, the attackers invaded the community without warning and opened fire randomly, forcing many to flee into the darkness for safety.

The violence didn’t end there. Eyewitnesses also reported that the assault extended to Gyenbwas, a neighboring community in the Langai District, where dozens of houses were set ablaze. Families have been left homeless, and the atmosphere in the area remains tense.

Efforts to obtain statements from security officials were not successful. Calls to the spokesman for Operation Safe Haven, Major Samson Zhakom, went unanswered, and the contact number for Plateau Police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, was unreachable.

Amid growing fear, community members are urging the government and security agencies to intervene swiftly and establish a permanent presence to prevent further bloodshed.
