Nigeria Partners with Meta to Launch National AI Accelerator

Nigeria has launched a major AI initiative in partnership with Meta, unveiling the Nigeria AI Accelerator Program to boost tech-driven development.

The project supports local startups solving real-world problems in sectors like health, education, agriculture, and finance.

In a significant stride toward deepening its technology ecosystem, the Nigerian Federal Government has partnered with Meta to launch the Nigeria AI Accelerator Program. This initiative, facilitated through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, is designed to empower startups creating AI-based solutions for the country’s socio-economic development.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, aims to harness AI to solve real-world challenges in agriculture, health, education, and finance, placing Nigerian startups at the center of global tech evolution.

The accelerator will be implemented by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), alongside its research arm, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR). The first cohort of the program is set to run from August to December 2025, and applications are now open, with the deadline set for July 12, 2025.

Selected participants will gain access to Meta’s global innovation resources, including technical support, mentorship, and product development frameworks tailored to local contexts. The program is targeted at AI ventures working in critical sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and financial services.

Meta adds global firepower to Nigeria’s AI ambitions

By partnering with Meta, Nigeria is solidifying its position on the global AI map. This collaboration provides local startups and innovators with direct exposure to international best practices and the opportunity to network with industry leaders. It also aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to integrate cutting-edge technologies into its economic development plan.

Meta’s involvement comes just months after Nigeria’s successful collaboration with Google in 2024, which saw the rollout of a ₦100 million AI fund supporting 10 startups. That effort was further strengthened by a $1.5 million funding commitment backed by Luminate. These moves underscore the country’s increasing engagement with Big Tech players to accelerate national innovation.

Speaking on the launch, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani stated that the AI Accelerator is about more than just technology. “It’s about making Nigeria’s innovation economy competitive, inclusive, and sustainable. This program is a reflection of our long-term commitment to digital empowerment.”

Building a sustainable AI ecosystem

The Nigeria AI Accelerator Program is part of a broader national plan to develop a robust AI framework. The groundwork for this was laid in 2023 when the government began crafting a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, bringing together experts from within Nigeria and the diaspora to map out policies, research support, and talent development pathways.

According to Dr. Tijani, the aim is to ensure that Nigerian startups not only adapt to global AI trends but actively contribute to them. He emphasized the importance of programs that are “locally relevant but globally competitive,” citing the growing demand for AI solutions tailored to African challenges.

This latest initiative also comes as other global tech players double down on their AI commitments in Africa. Google, for example, recently pledged $5.8 million to train the sub-Saharan African workforce in core AI skills, reflecting a continent-wide race to build digital capacity.

What comes next?

Shortlisted startups for the Nigeria AI Accelerator will go through an intensive mentorship period, during which they’ll refine their AI products and business models. The program will culminate in a demo day in December 2025, where participants will pitch their innovations to investors, partners, and stakeholders.

This collaboration with Meta is not just a headline event; it’s a key step in Nigeria’s effort to lead Africa’s AI revolution. With focused public-private partnerships and a growing talent base, the country is positioning itself to be a dominant force in the future of artificial intelligence on the continent.
