Tension Persists in Rivers State Despite Increased Security as Cult Clashes Escalate
Rivers State’s Diobu community is gripped by fear as cult and gang violence escalates with deadly consequences.
Recent attacks, killings, and suspected political interference have left residents terrified, demanding urgent action from silent security agencies
Despite repeated assurances from security agencies about intensified patrols and surveillance, the Diobu community in Rivers State remains deeply unsettled. A fresh wave of violent clashes, reportedly involving cult and gang members, has plunged the area back into fear and chaos.
According to a report by crime journalist John Amawoh, a terrifying incident unfolded on Akwuzu Street, located around the Mile 1 axis of Diobu. On the evening of the attack, a group of suspected gang members strategically observed and monitored a birthday celebration in the area. Once they were certain of the guests’ positions and the environment, they stormed the venue, robbing attendees and nearby residents. The attackers reportedly took away mobile phones, money, and other valuable items before fleeing through the waterfront, leaving the community in a state of shock and panic.
Tragically, it was also reported that a police officer lost his life during a separate incident around the Elechi waterfront. The officer was allegedly caught in a crossfire during a confrontation with gang members engaged in an ongoing turf war. Although the police have yet to officially comment on the officer’s death, eyewitnesses believe it was linked to the same violent groups currently tormenting the area.
Residents of Diobu have increasingly found themselves caught in the crosshairs of this growing conflict. Over the past weekend alone, multiple people were reportedly injured or killed by stray bullets. Among the victims were a taxi driver who lost his life along Etche Street and a middle-aged woman who succumbed to injuries from a stray bullet, suspected to have been fired by one of the gang members.
These incidents have only heightened the fear among locals. Some community members, who spoke to National Forerunner under the condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation. Many believe the current state of emergency declared in the state has done little to improve their safety. Rather, they say, gangs continue to roam freely, particularly in the Diobu axis, where daily life has been overshadowed by anxiety and uncertainty.
Further investigation by this publication revealed a disturbing trend. Several residents alleged that some of the criminal elements causing unrest have political backing. According to them, cult members arrested by the police are often released shortly afterward, thanks to powerful individuals who intervene on their behalf. This cycle of arrest and release, they say, has emboldened the criminals, giving them the confidence to carry out violent acts without fear of consequences.
In a recent development, a young man known to be affiliated with one of the gang groups was reportedly released back into the community just hours after being taken into custody. His return has only worsened residents’ fears, as they brace themselves for possible retaliation or fresh attacks.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command has not issued any official statement regarding the recent events. The silence has done little to reassure the public, who now look to state authorities and security agencies for swift action to restore peace and ensure the safety of everyone in the troubled Diobu community.
