Tinubu Cancels National Broadcast, Opts to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day
Tinubu has cancelled his scheduled nationwide broadcast for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day celebration.
Instead, he will address the nation during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called off his planned nationwide broadcast initially scheduled for Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration. Instead, he will speak during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
This update was made public through a statement from Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations. According to him, the President’s change of plans is due to his confirmed participation in the special parliamentary session, where he will deliver his Democracy Day message directly to lawmakers and the nation. The statement emphasized that other activities planned for the occasion remain unchanged.
This year’s Democracy Day is themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.” It reflects the government’s focus on deepening democratic structures and pushing forward with institutional reforms.
President Tinubu is expected to use his address to spotlight key aspects of his administration’s reform agenda, reaffirm the importance of unity across the country, and urge both citizens and government institutions to play active roles in safeguarding democracy.
Democracy Day, celebrated on June 12, commemorates the return to civil rule in 1999 and honors the 1993 presidential election, widely seen as one of the fairest elections in Nigeria’s history.
