Air Chief Seeks Urgent Delivery of U.S. Viper Helicopters for Security Operations

Air Chief Hassan Abubakar has urged faster delivery of AH-1Z Viper helicopters to aid anti-terror efforts.

He called the aircraft crucial for strengthening Nigeria’s air power and internal security operations.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has made a strong appeal for the accelerated delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters currently being procured from the United States, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s aerial combat and internal security capabilities.

Speaking during an official engagement with defense partners, Air Marshal Abubakar stressed that the timely arrival of these advanced combat aircraft is crucial in light of Nigeria’s persistent security challenges. He noted that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has made significant strides in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism efforts across the country, particularly in the North-East and other hotspots where insurgents, bandits, and criminal elements have disrupted peace and stability.

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters is a game-changer in our ongoing operations,” the Air Chief remarked. “But for these assets to have maximum impact, they must be delivered as quickly as possible. The current security threats demand not just commitment and courage from our forces, but also timely access to the right tools and technology.”

The AH-1Z Viper, manufactured by Bell Helicopter, is one of the most advanced multi-role attack helicopters in the world. It is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, precision weapons systems, and enhanced survivability features. Its firepower, speed, and agility make it particularly effective for close air support and offensive missions in both urban and rugged terrains.

Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the growing dependence on air power in Nigeria’s joint military operations, especially in supporting ground troops, conducting reconnaissance, and striking high-value terrorist targets. He reiterated that the Vipers would significantly boost NAF’s operational effectiveness and contribute to restoring peace in conflict-prone areas.

He also acknowledged the strategic defense cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, noting that the relationship has been instrumental in training, intelligence sharing, and supply of key military assets. However, he appealed to all stakeholders involved in the delivery process to remove bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensure the helicopters arrive without further delay.

The push for expedited delivery comes at a time when the Nigerian government is under pressure to deliver tangible results in its fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. With the AH-1Z Viper helicopters, the Nigerian Air Force is expected to significantly improve its response time, precision engagement, and overall deterrent capability.

As the nation continues to invest in modernizing its military assets, the Air Chief reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens from emerging threats.
