Governor Okpebholo Declares Divine Mission to Eradicate Cultism in Edo
Governor Okpebholo says his rise to power is divine, declaring a spiritual mission to end cultism.
At a Father’s Day thanksgiving, he links governance to fatherhood, urging unity and moral leadership.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has declared that his emergence as governor was divinely orchestrated to lead the fight against cultism and other social vices plaguing the state. Speaking on Sunday during a special thanksgiving mass, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep conviction that his leadership is part of a higher purpose, especially in addressing the growing menace of cult-related violence in the state.
The event, which marked the second anniversary of the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, in office, also coincided with the global celebration of Father’s Day. Held at a Catholic church in the state, the thanksgiving mass brought together political leaders, clergy, and community members for a moment of reflection and spiritual rededication.
While addressing the congregation, Governor Okpebholo acknowledged the seriousness of the cultism crisis and revealed that his strength alone would not be enough to tackle such a deeply rooted issue. According to him, it is not by physical might or personal capability that he intends to combat the scourge, but rather through divine guidance.
“I want everyone here to understand that God is truly present in our affairs,” the governor said. “If dealing with cultism was about physical strength or muscle, I don’t think I would be the one in this position. But God has sent me on this mission. This is His assignment, and I am only the vessel.”
He further highlighted how the responsibility of fatherhood mirrors that of governance, saying both require courage, compassion, and an unwavering sense of duty. “Being a father is not just about providing; it’s about leadership, sacrifice, and emotional strength. I want to encourage all fathers to continue loving their children and raising them with care. Children are God’s blessings, and it’s our job to nurture them,” he said.
The governor’s remarks received a warm reception from the audience, many of whom applauded his bold commitment to restoring peace and order in Edo State.
In his remarks, Speaker Agbebaku praised the governor for attending the ceremony despite his packed schedule. He used the occasion to reaffirm the House of Assembly’s willingness to collaborate closely with the executive arm to improve the lives of Edo citizens.
“Your Excellency, we deeply appreciate your presence here today. As lawmakers, we are ready to form a strong working relationship with your administration. Our goal is to build a united front that will push Edo State to greater heights. Together, we can ensure that our people enjoy the best governance in Nigeria,” Agbebaku said.
Earlier in the church service, special recognition awards were presented to several top government officials in honor of their service to the state. Those recognized included Governor Okpebholo himself, Speaker Agbebaku, the Deputy Speaker, and the House Majority Leader.
The thanksgiving mass served not only as a moment to mark political milestones but also as a call to action for collective efforts in promoting peace, good leadership, and responsible fatherhood across Edo State.
