The Lagos State Police Command has addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video of Pastor Paul Adefarasin holding what appeared to be a firearm. In a statement posted on their official social media platform, the police confirmed that the item in question was not a lethal weapon, but rather a stun gun.
According to the statement, the device is a prohibited anti-riot tool under Nigerian law, but it is important to note that it is non-lethal and not classified as a conventional firearm.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin further explained that while stun guns are not legal for civilian use, they are often mistaken for handguns due to their similar appearance. He added that the ongoing investigation aims to determine how the cleric came into possession of the equipment and whether any laws were breached in the process.
“Contrary to public speculation, the item Pastor Adefarasin was seen holding is not a live firearm or any form of lethal weapon,” the statement read. “It is a stun gun, which, while prohibited, is designed for temporary incapacitation and not fatal harm.”
The police also revealed that Pastor Adefarasin has been granted administrative bail as the inquiry continues. The decision, they said, is in line with standard procedures for non-violent, non-criminal possession cases.
The viral video, which ignited widespread debate online, captured the House on the Rock pastor displaying the device during a sermon raising public concern and prompting demands for clarification from the authorities.
The police assured the public that the case would be handled transparently and in accordance with the law.
