Legendary Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie has expressed heartfelt appreciation after discovering that Afrobeats star Davido drew inspiration from his work.
The music icon reacted after Davido revealed in a past interview that Chimezie’s classic track “Because Of English” inspired his own hit song “With You,” which features Omah Lay.
Speaking with Hip TV, Chimezie who made a cameo appearance in the music video for “With You,” released earlier this week, shared that he had no idea his song influenced Davido’s project until the singer personally told him.
“Words cannot describe how I feel. I’m so delighted. I feel honored. And I’m grateful to Davido for recognizing that he drew inspiration from me,” Chimezie said.
“I didn’t even know that his song With You was inspired by my song Because Of English. He was the person who made me understand that. He put a call across to me and confessed that he was inspired by my song. The humility and everything, I feel so happy about it,” he added.
Chimezie also praised Davido for his humility and respect, noting that such gestures are rare and deeply appreciated, especially coming from a global music star.
The veteran artist, who recently signed a publishing deal with Sony Music, further revealed that he remains active in music. He explained that he and fellow legends intentionally stepped aside over the years to give room for the younger generation to shine.
Chimezie’s presence in the “With You” video and Davido’s recognition of his influence have been widely celebrated as a touching moment of intergenerational appreciation within Nigeria’s evolving music scene.
