Don Jazzy Reflects on Missed Opportunities, Names Artists He Regrets Not Signing
Don Jazzy has revealed he regrets not signing stars like Simi, Teni, Falz, and Davido.
He admitted their talent was clear early on but said no label can sign everyone.
Veteran music producer and Mavin Records founder, Don Jazzy, has opened up about some of the artists he wishes he had signed earlier in their careers. During a recent interview, the industry heavyweight candidly admitted that despite his long list of successes, there are still a few names he regrets not having on the Mavin roster.

Don Jazzy revealed that he had a particular interest in singers Simi and Teni, both of whom he admired for their distinctive sound and strong work ethic. “I like Simi. I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I like Teni. I wish I did,” he shared, acknowledging that their talent was evident even before they became household names.
He also reflected on Davido, noting that while he had the opportunity to bring the megastar into his label early on, he chose not to, feeling confident that Davido would find success regardless. “I had the opportunity for Davido, obviously, but I didn’t because I kind of figured that he would be fine,” Don Jazzy said.
Another near miss was Falz, the comic rapper and actor. According to Don Jazzy, discussions were held and a deal almost materialized, but it never reached completion. As for Wizkid, the Mavin boss explained that any potential collaboration was out of the question at the time, as the singer was already signed to Banky W’s EME label.
Commenting on the realities of the business, Don Jazzy admitted that talent alone isn’t always enough to influence signing decisions. “You can’t sign everybody, no matter how talented they are,” he noted.
Despite these missed chances, Don Jazzy has cemented his legacy in the Nigerian music industry by developing stars like Tiwa Savage, Rema, Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, and Ladipoe, among others. His eye for talent and track record of success continues to make him one of the most respected and influential figures in African music.
