WAFCON 2024: Super Falcons Set for Showdown With Ghana in Morocco Friendly

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Ghana’s Black Princesses in a crucial pre-WAFCON friendly in Morocco.

The match sets the stage for a fiery showdown as both teams finalize tournament preparations.

As part of their final preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to lock horns with archrivals Ghana’s Black Princesses in an international friendly scheduled to take place in Morocco.

This encounter between two of Africa’s top women’s football nations promises to be intense, serving as a high-stakes rehearsal ahead of the tournament’s kickoff. The match comes shortly after the Super Falcons’ impressive 2-0 victory over Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses, which was held two weeks ago at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

The Nigerian team, under the guidance of head coach Justine Madugu, will play Portugal in another preparatory match scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2025, in Lisbon. This friendly will serve as a further test of the team’s readiness before they move to Morocco for the final build-up.

Following their clash with Portugal, the Super Falcons and their coaching crew are expected to depart for Morocco on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, where they will settle in for the last phase of their training ahead of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Black Princesses have already arrived in Benslimane, Morocco, to finalize their preparations. Ghana has been placed in Group C of the tournament, where they will face stiff competition from defending champions South Africa (Banyana Banyana), Mali, and Tanzania.

The Super Falcons, on the other hand, are grouped in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. Nigeria, a dominant force in African women’s football, is eyeing another WAFCON title and will be looking to sharpen their form through these friendlies.

Their campaign will officially begin on Sunday, July 5, 2025, when they take on Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. The team is banking on a mix of experienced players and emerging talents to secure a strong tournament run.

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, although tagged 2024, will be held from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Morocco. The biennial competition was rescheduled and is expected to bring together the continent’s best women’s national teams in a battle for supremacy.

Nigeria’s technical team is using this final camp period to test formations, assess player fitness, and build chemistry among squad members. The friendlies against Portugal and Ghana are seen as vital opportunities to gauge the team’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Fans are especially looking forward to the face-off between Nigeria and Ghana, two long-standing rivals with rich football histories. Although the match is a friendly, the intensity is expected to mirror that of a tournament encounter, as both sides seek to assert dominance and boost morale ahead of WAFCON.

As the countdown begins, expectations are high for the Super Falcons to live up to their reputation as one of Africa’s most successful women’s teams. Their preparation phase continues to reflect ambition and readiness, signaling that they intend to compete not just for participation, but for the title.
