Police arrest one suspect over deadly June 13 attack on Yelwata community in Benue State.

Authorities promise tighter security as search continues for more suspects behind the assault.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the recent deadly assault on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on June 13, sent shockwaves across the state, as armed assailants invaded the quiet community, reportedly leaving several residents injured and properties destroyed. Although the full casualty figure is yet to be officially released, the attack has drawn widespread condemnation.

Confirming the development, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, said on Friday that one suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the incident. She noted that an investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and to track down other individuals involved.

“Following the June 13 incident at Yelwata in Guma LGA, our operatives have arrested one suspect in connection with the attack. He is currently being interrogated while efforts are being intensified to apprehend other accomplices,” Anene said.

She assured residents of Guma and surrounding areas of heightened security presence and urged members of the public to volunteer credible information that could aid in the ongoing investigation.

Community leaders and civil society groups have continued to call on the government to take urgent steps to prevent further violence and restore lasting peace to rural areas in the state.
