Police Arrest 28 Suspects Linked to Yelewata Killings

Nigerian police have arrested 28 suspects over the deadly Yelewata attack that claimed nearly 200 lives.

The IGP confirmed ongoing investigations, following President Tinubu’s directive to ensure swift justice.

The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the arrest of 28 people suspected to be behind the recent deadly attack in Yelewata, located in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. This comes less than a week after President Bola Tinubu gave a firm directive to security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, made the announcement during a press briefing held on Tuesday. He stated that investigations are ongoing and efforts are being made to track down additional suspects connected to the violence in Yelewata.

Egbetokun reassured the public that the police are fully in control and not overwhelmed by the situation. He added that officers are currently recovering illegal arms and ammunition from individuals believed to be stockpiling them for violent acts.

In addition to the 28 arrests, the police chief also revealed that 22 suspects who were arrested in Jos, Plateau State, over the killing of nine people travelling to a wedding in Quanpan, will also face prosecution.

The Yelewata massacre, which happened a few weeks ago, involved the killing of nearly 200 residents and the destruction of several homes and properties. The incident triggered widespread condemnation, including a reaction from Pope Leo XIV.

President Tinubu visited Benue State in response to the killings and ordered security forces to act swiftly in identifying and prosecuting those responsible. The arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing effort to restore peace and justice to the affected communities.
