Governor Otti Warns Journalists Against Spreading False Reports

Governor Alex Otti has called on journalists in Abia State to stop publishing false or misleading reports.

He urged the media to focus on promoting truth and public confidence.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has appealed to journalists and media professionals, especially those operating within the state, to steer clear of publishing false information that could cause panic among the public.

He made this appeal on Tuesday at the 2025 Media Vision Africa training session held in Umuahia. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, encouraged members of the media to focus on stories that build public confidence rather than spread fear.

Otti noted that the role of the press is vital in shaping society, especially during a time when Abia State is concentrating on improving security and reviving the economy. He emphasized the importance of truth in reporting, urging journalists to avoid propaganda and instead ground their stories in factual information.

“In today’s Abia, where security and economic recovery are top priorities, we need narratives that inspire confidence, not fear,” he said.

The governor also cautioned against the distortion of facts. He advised reporters to offer balanced coverage by highlighting both the challenges and the progress being made in the state.

“I urge all media practitioners in Abia and across Nigeria to remain faithful image makers, not merchants of fake news,” Otti added.

During the same event, the President of Vision Africa, Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, said the training aims to equip young Nigerian journalists with leadership skills for the future. He encouraged youths to become innovators and job creators rather than relying solely on political or government appointments for their livelihood.
