Terry G Claps Back at Critics, Urges Respect for Music Legends
Terry G fires back at critics dismissing his legacy, urging Nigerians to respect music pioneers like Western nations do.
The Akpako Master condemns Africa’s disregard for icons, warning it could harm Afrobeats’ global standing despite its growth.
Renowned Afrobeats artist Gabriel Oche Amanyi, widely known as Terry G, has responded to those who say his era is over, calling on Nigerians to show respect to music pioneers regardless of their present relevance.
In a passionate message shared on social media, the Akpako Master expressed disappointment over how quickly Nigerians dismiss veteran artists, often branding them as “outdated.” He compared this attitude with that of Western societies, where legendary musicians are revered and their legacies preserved.
“I hear people say, ‘Your time don pass!’ and it sounds like brain damage,” Terry G said. “In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls Jay-Z or Beyoncé outdated. Their impact is honored.”
He pointed out that Africa, and Nigeria in particular, often fails to appreciate its cultural icons. According to him, this disregard for music legends could eventually diminish the value of Afrobeats on a global scale, even if the genre continues to grow in popularity.
“But here in Africa, especially Nigeria, we’re quick to discard our own,” he said. “That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods.”
Terry G emphasized the importance of continuous growth and self-worth, regardless of one’s stage in life or career.
“It’s time to break free from that mindset,” he added. “If you don’t keep adding value to yourself and those around you, your worth will fade no matter how great you once were. We must do better.”
His comments have sparked conversations online, with fans and fellow musicians reflecting on how African societies can better honour their entertainment legends and preserve cultural heritage.
