British Envoy Hails Tinubu’s Economic Reforms as Bold and Timely

British envoy Richard Montgomery praises Tinubu’s reforms, calling them bold steps toward Nigeria’s progress.

He says the policies are tough but vital, urging civil servants to ensure effective implementation.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for taking what he described as bold and necessary steps through ongoing economic reforms.

Montgomery, who spoke on Thursday during the International Civil Service Conference in Abuja, noted that while the reforms are tough on citizens in the short term, they are beginning to yield visible results and lay the groundwork for long-term development.

He commended the Nigerian government for having the courage to tackle long-standing economic challenges through decisive policies. According to him, such reforms are essential for building a more stable and prosperous future.

“In my two years as high commissioner, I’ve been deeply impressed by the resolve of Nigerian leaders to confront difficult issues and initiate far-reaching reforms,” Montgomery said. “Though painful in the short term, they are already making an impact and are key to setting Nigeria on a stronger economic path.”

The envoy, however, pointed out that reforms alone cannot address all of Nigeria’s institutional challenges. He emphasized that the success of these policies will depend on how well they are implemented by the public sector.

“These reforms won’t solve every challenge faced by civil servants,” he stated, “but their success largely depends on the dedication and efficiency of the public sector in implementing them.”

Montgomery stressed the importance of professionalism, accountability, and integrity within the civil service. He noted that the effectiveness of any government depends heavily on the strength of its bureaucracy.

He also urged Nigerian policymakers and civil servants to learn from other countries that have successfully managed similar economic transitions. “Nigeria can benefit from studying the reform journeys of countries like India, China, and Singapore,” he added.
