Nasarawa Amazons Captain Vows Fierce Challenge Against Rivers Angels

Nasarawa Amazons’ captain Josephine Mathias has vowed a tough fight in Saturday’s Federation Cup final.

The showdown with Rivers Angels promises a fierce battle for women’s football glory.

Nasarawa Amazons’ captain Josephine Mathias has expressed strong determination ahead of their high-stakes clash against Rivers Angels in the final of the 2025 President’s Federation Cup. The women’s final is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Rivers Angels, the defending champions and most decorated side in the history of the competition, with nine titles, are considered the favorites going into the match. However, Mathias believes her team is ready to put up a fierce challenge and is not intimidated by the pedigree of their opponents.

In an interview shared via the Nasarawa Amazons’ official X handle, Mathias acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter but assured fans that the team would not be taking the game lightly.

“It’s not going to be an easy game for us because we have played them in the Super Six, and we won,” she said. “But this time around, it’s a different ball game, so we are not going to take it lightly with them. I know it’s going to be a tough game for us and for them too.”

The final represents a crucial opportunity for the Amazons to reclaim the prestigious title they last won in 2019 marking their second overall. Since then, they have remained competitive but have fallen short of clinching the trophy, with Rivers Angels often proving to be their biggest stumbling block.

Mathias, who has served as a vocal leader on and off the pitch, emphasized her role in inspiring the squad to give their best performance yet.

“As the captain, I motivate my players and talk to them, and they are ready for the match. We are here to give 100 per cent and see what God will do because it’s only God that has the final say, but we will do our best,” she added.

The showdown is expected to be a thrilling display of elite women’s football, as both sides possess experience, tactical discipline, and ambition. For Rivers Angels, a win would further cement their legacy. For Nasarawa Amazons, it’s a chance to prove they can dethrone the giants and reclaim their place at the top.

Meanwhile, the men’s final of the President Federation Cup will feature Kwara United taking on underdog sensation Abakaliki FC, who have stunned fans with their unexpected journey to the final.
