Ogun ‘Police Officer’ Nabbed for Car Theft

A man pretending to be a police officer was caught trying to steal an SUV in Ogun State.

He was stopped by OPC members after suspiciously starting the car at a mechanic’s workshop.

A 42-year-old man who allegedly posed as a mobile police officer was caught on Friday while attempting to steal a Toyota Highlander SUV in the Magboro area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The suspect, later identified as Omotoso Ayobami, was apprehended by members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) as he tried to make off with the vehicle. According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred at a local mechanic workshop where the SUV, bearing registration number KSF-146JZ, had been taken for repairs.

Witnesses revealed that Ayobami arrived at the workshop and, acting with confidence, approached the unattended vehicle. While the mechanic was briefly away, Ayobami allegedly entered the vehicle, picked the key from the dashboard, started the engine, and attempted to drive away. However, his suspicious behavior drew the attention of people nearby.

As he tried to reverse out of the compound, OPC operatives quickly intervened, stopping him before he could escape with the vehicle. He was immediately apprehended and questioned.

During the interrogation, Ayobami reportedly claimed to be a mobile police officer. However, he failed to provide any form of identification to support his claim, nor could he give a credible explanation for his actions at the workshop. His attempt to impersonate a law enforcement officer raised further suspicion about his motives and background.

The OPC members at the scene detained him and later handed him over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation. The swift action by the local security group was commended by residents, who praised their vigilance in preventing what could have been a successful daylight theft.

As of the time of this report, further investigations were ongoing to determine whether Ayobami had any accomplices or if he had been involved in similar incidents in the past.
