Flood Destroys Homes, Kills Two in Borno State

Heavy rain for over 12 hours has caused serious flooding in parts of Borno State.

Two people have died and many homes in Gumsuri and Wovi are badly damaged.

Heavy rainfall lasting more than half a day has caused widespread flooding in Gumsuri and Wovi, two communities in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The disaster, which occurred on Sunday, claimed the lives of at least two people and left many residents without homes.

According to local reports, the flood followed 12 to 13 hours of uninterrupted rain, leading to the destruction of numerous houses. Nearly half of all homes in the affected areas were either heavily damaged or completely submerged, forcing residents to evacuate to safer ground with only a few of their belongings.

A community elder in Gumsuri described the situation as dire. “We are overwhelmed,” he said. “Many have lost everything. We fear more bodies may be found as search efforts continue.”

Those affected are calling on government authorities, aid groups, and well-meaning individuals to assist with emergency shelter, food, and medical support.

Zagazola Makama reports that emergency teams are already on the ground, working to assess the damage and confirm the total number of casualties.
