Oba of Benin Praises Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo’s Leadership

Nigeria’s unity must be protected above politics, the Oba of Benin told visiting APC governors.

He urged national leaders to prioritize peace, respect tradition, and support Tinubu’s vision for progress.

His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has urged Nigerian governors to prioritize the unity and peace of the nation, warning that political, ethnic, or religious divisions must not be allowed to destabilize the country.

The revered monarch made this appeal during a weekend visit by governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, who were in Edo State to express solidarity with Governor Monday Okpebholo. The delegation, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, included other governors, federal ministers, senators, and top APC leaders, all reaffirming their support for the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Oba praises Tinubu’s bold reforms

Commending President Bola Tinubu, Oba Ewuare II described his leadership as both courageous and necessary, especially in addressing Nigeria’s mounting economic and security challenges. He urged Nigerians to offer constructive criticism, rather than divisive rhetoric, noting that while leaders must be held accountable, national cohesion must never be compromised.

“We should all support President Tinubu in his efforts to keep Nigeria together,” the Oba said. “Our diversity is a blessing, and our responsibility is to use it to achieve peace and prosperity.”

The monarch also praised Governor Okpebholo for respecting traditional institutions and fostering collaboration with the palace. He emphasized the critical role of royal fathers in grassroots development, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation, urging state governments to maintain close ties with traditional authorities.

Uzodimma seeks royal blessings, outlines priorities

Governor Uzodimma, speaking on behalf of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, reassured the Oba that Governor Okpebholo is dedicated to fulfilling his campaign promises. He listed key focus areas for the APC administration in Edo, including infrastructure rehabilitation, youth and women empowerment, educational development, and enhanced security.

He also solicited royal prayers for wisdom and success, stating that the governors under the APC banner will continue to work together to deliver impactful governance across the country.

Historic tensions and a new chapter

During an interactive session with journalists led by NUJ Edo State Chairman Comrade Festus Alenkhe, Oba Ewuare II contrasted the current harmonious relationship with Governor Okpebholo to what he described as a hostile era under former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The Oba revealed that the previous administration withheld the Benin Traditional Council’s allocations for seven months, forcing him to use personal funds to sustain palace operations. “For seven months, not a kobo was given to the palace. I had to personally find money to pay the staff. The palace was neglected,” he said.

He also revisited historical grievances, citing a decades-old construction of a high-rise building near the palace during his grandfather’s reign, which he said was done in defiance of royal objections and violated sacred traditions.

Advocacy for a constitutional role for monarchs

The Oba reiterated his call for a constitutional role for traditional rulers, stressing that such positions must be clearly defined to prevent abuse. He warned that certain individuals masquerading as traditional rulers engage in conduct that demeans the institution and undermines public trust.

“Traditional rulers must not engage in criminal activities or partisan politics,” he emphasized. “We must uphold the dignity of our heritage.”

Cultural tourism and heritage tour

As part of their visit, the APC governors toured significant cultural sites in Benin City, including the Benin National Museum, the ancient Benin Moat, and Igun Street, home of the famed Benin bronze casters. The tour aimed to foster stronger ties between state governments and traditional institutions through initiatives like community policing, rural development, and cultural tourism.

Leaders at the event reiterated their commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and supporting Governor Okpebholo’s developmental strides in Edo State.
