INEC Chairman Meets RECs to Finalize Key Election Preparations

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu is meeting RECs to finalize plans for major upcoming elections.

Discussions cover Anambra 2025 poll, CVR rollout, bye-elections and early FCT 2026 groundwork.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, is currently holding a strategic meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from across the country. The high-level engagement, which is ongoing at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, aims to finalize critical aspects of the Commission’s preparations for a series of key electoral events scheduled over the coming months.

Top on the agenda of the meeting is the November 2025 Anambra State governorship election. The Anambra poll is a crucial political event, and the Commission is working meticulously to ensure a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process. Discussions are focused on finalizing the timetable and operational logistics that will govern the election, including deployment of personnel and materials, security arrangements, stakeholder engagements, and voter education strategies.

The meeting is also expected to address plans for conducting pending bye-elections in various constituencies across the country. These bye-elections, which may have been delayed due to litigation or administrative reasons, are being prioritized as part of INEC’s broader commitment to ensuring that all vacant legislative seats are duly filled in compliance with constitutional mandates.

In addition, the Commission is laying out the framework for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. The CVR is vital for enrolling eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to vote, as well as for updating voter records for those who have changed their residence or lost their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The exercise is particularly significant given the approaching Anambra election and other national polls. The Commission is expected to announce specific dates and modalities for the CVR in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, early preparations are underway for the 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Though more than a year away, INEC is initiating groundwork to ensure that all phases of the electoral process from delimitation of council wards to training of election officials are executed efficiently and without delay.

The meeting between Prof. Yakubu and the RECs underscores INEC’s proactive approach to election management. The Commission continues to emphasize the importance of planning, transparency, and stakeholder collaboration in delivering credible elections. With several electoral activities on the horizon, INEC’s leadership appears focused on strengthening institutional readiness and public confidence in the democratic process.
