Man Dies by Suicide After Allegedly Attacking Girlfriend with Acid in Lagos
A domestic clash on Lagos Island turned deadly after a man allegedly attacked his partner.
He later took his own life, leaving the community stunned and calling for urgent reforms.
A tragic incident unfolded on Lagos Island where a 43-year-old man, Pere Faruk, allegedly committed suicide after reportedly attacking his girlfriend with acid during a domestic dispute.
The shocking event occurred around 5:40 p.m. on June 30 at a residence located at No. 8 Messy Street. Eyewitnesses and family members said the couple had a heated altercation earlier in the day, which allegedly escalated into violence. During the conflict, Faruk was said to have doused his girlfriend, identified as Kemi Bashiru, with a corrosive substance believed to be acid.
Kemi, who sustained serious injuries from the attack, was immediately rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital. Medical personnel confirmed that she is receiving treatment for extensive chemical burns. Her condition, while critical, is being closely monitored by doctors.
Shortly after the assault, Faruk was found lifeless in his room. A bottle of Sniper, a common household insecticide, was discovered next to him, suggesting he had ingested the substance in an apparent act of suicide. He was transported to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited in a public mortuary for autopsy.
According to a family source, it was Faruk’s younger brother, Pere Jeli, who first received word of the incident. Jeli, who lives nearby on Igbosere Street, quickly raised the alarm and alerted authorities and emergency responders.
The police have since cordoned off the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violent episode. Officers are reportedly gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events that led to the acid attack and the suspected suicide.
Community members have expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, calling for increased awareness around mental health and domestic violence to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
