Governor Mutfwang Abolishes GM Role at Plateau United in Major Club Restructuring

Plateau United axes General Manager role in bold move to revive football operations.

New directors and coaches join as Mutfwang’s reforms target structure, strategy, and success.

In a bold restructuring move, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially scrapped the position of General Manager at Plateau United Football Club, marking a significant shift in the club’s administrative structure following a difficult 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The decision is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at revitalizing the Jos-based club after narrowly avoiding relegation. According to a statement from the club’s Media Director, Yaksat Maklek, the General Manager role has been dissolved and replaced with three new specialized positions: Sporting Director, Commercial Director, and Operations Director.

This revamp introduces a corporate-style management model designed to separate technical duties, commercial responsibilities, and day-to-day operations. Last week, Gideon Izang was announced as the new Sporting Director, while the positions of Commercial and Operations Director remain to be filled.

“The General Manager’s office no longer exists at Plateau United,” Maklek confirmed. “Instead, we now have a Sporting Director, Operations Director, and Commercial Director. The state government will soon appoint individuals for the remaining two positions.”

Governor Mutfwang’s shake-up did not stop at the administrative level. The club confirmed that Mbwas Mangut will retain his role as Technical Adviser, ensuring continuity in the team’s tactical direction. Additionally, Olushola Adigun has been named the new Head Coach, assuming key responsibilities for day-to-day training and match preparation.

In a related development, Hosea Mutla Habila, who previously held leadership duties within Plateau United, has been reassigned as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Grassroots Football Development. The appointment signals the administration’s renewed focus on community-level sports, in line with the state’s broader vision of nurturing talent from the grassroots.

Governor Mutfwang’s overhaul of Plateau United comes in response to mounting pressure from fans and stakeholders for better governance and improved performance. The club’s close brush with relegation underscored longstanding issues within its structure, prompting calls for reform.

By adopting a multi-tiered management approach, the government hopes to inject professionalism, accountability, and commercial viability into one of the state’s most visible sporting assets.

As the 2025/2026 NPFL season approaches, attention will now turn to the appointment of the Operations Director and Commercial Director, who will play critical roles in rebuilding the club’s performance and brand reputation. With a revamped leadership structure and renewed government support, Plateau United is positioning itself for a fresh chapter in Nigerian top-flight football.
